Musical Theatre West kicks off the new year with Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, featuring Norman Large in the title role. Joining him are Debbie Prutsman as Mrs. Lovett, Michelle Duffy as Beggar Woman, Dan Callaway as Anthony, Roland Rusinek as The Beadle, Jim Holdridge as Tobias, Richard Gould as Judge Turpin and Alan M-L Wager as Pirelli.
The ensemble includes Travis Robertson, Richard Bermudez, Victor Hernandez, Zane Gerson, Jason Evans, Jeremy Bernard, Michael Skidgel, Christopher Van Etten, Bill Marty Johnson, Isaac James, Heather Lundstedt, Amy Gillette, Stephanie Burkett-Gerson, Jessica Bernard, Lois Bourgon and Rachel Ellen Green. La Mirada Theatre begins 2010 with the Tony Award-winning musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee by William Finn and Rachel Shenkin. Jeff Maynard directs. Musical direction is by David O and choreography by DJ Gray. The cast features Jason Graae, Melvin Abston, Shanon Mari Mills, Cassie Silva, Laura Griffith, Tom Zohar, Brett Ryback, Daniel Tatar and Lana McKissack. Preview performances begin February 5 (with a press opening on Saturday, February 6) and the show will run through February 21. www.lamiradatheatre.com/
Chance Theater in Orange County will open Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along on January 29. Oanh Nguyen directs a cast that includes Ryland Dodge as Frank, Christina Silvoso as Mary, Jeremy Fillinger as Charley, Laura M. Hathaway as Gussie, Liz Holt as Beth, Amie Bjorklund as KT, Marc Marger as Joe, Andrew Eddins as Ru and Kyle Cooper as Jerome. The show runs through March 7. www.chancetheater.com/
Ryan O’Connor and Scott Nevins’ The Star Spot at Musical Mondays welcomes Michelle Hernandez to kick off the new year on January 4. Catch the show at Eleven Nightclub, 8811 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, 10 pm. No cover.
