Producers Michael Sterling and Tony Monsour have announced auditions for the 7th consecutive season of LA’s Next Great Stage Star® dedicated to discovering young talent in Los Angeles and neighboring communities throughout the Southland. For the second consecutive year - author, actress, concert headliner, and arts philanthropist Barbara Van Orden joins Sterling and Monsour by gifting LA's Next Great Stage Star® with the Barbara Van Orden Grant which provides invaluable assistance to production of the annual competition.
Auditions are by appointment only and will be scheduled between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. at Sterling’s Upstairs at the Federal: 5303 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91606 on Sunday, December 9. Interested talent ages 18 - 28 should call (818) 623-7300 x 2 to request an audition appointment. Please bring a photo and resume and be prepared to sing 16 - 32 bars of an up-tempo song and a ballad from a classic or contemporary Broadway musical. Musical Direction will be provided by James Lent and Michael Alfera.
LA’s Next Great Stage Star® 2013 will be presented as a series of six consecutive Sunday matinees opening January 6; with its much anticipated finale to be presented February 10, 2013. Attendance at the competition is by advance reservation only: 818 754-8700. Twenty contestants will be selected from auditions to compete for the 2013 title, a $1000 cash award, a headlining engagement at Sterling's Upstairs during the New Year, and other valuable prizes. Contestants selected to compete in the competition are subject to a one time entry fee of $375.
Judging will be done by a live audience and an overall panel of nearly 20 of LA musical theatre’s most creative forces. Judges will give a live critique to each contestant at every competition. Contestants will compete at each competition with no eliminations until the Finale on February 10, 2013. The Finale will determine the selection of one winner and four finalists. Additionally, the winner of LA's Next Great Stage Star® 2013 and its four runners-up, will also be awarded private auditions from such LA based producer/director/casting directors. To date, Lewis Wilkenfeld of Cabrillo Music Theatre, Julia Flores Casting (McCoy/Rigby of La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, and Glenn Casale – Artistic Director of the Sacramento Music Circus, have participated with the competition since 2010.
As a direct result of LA’s Next Great Stage Star®, more than 40 of the annual competition’s overall 112 contestants have been cast in top regional theatre shows, Broadway national tours, Las Vegas productions, and network television shows; while 7 have made their Broadway and Off-Broadway debuts. Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal, the most critically acclaimed, award-winning supper club of its kind in the greater Los Angeles area, has set Sunday, December 15 as auditions for the 8th consecutive year of LA’s Next Great Stage Star®, announces executive producer Michael Sterling of Michael Sterling & Associates.

LA’s Next Great Stage Star® 2014 will be presented as a series of six Sunday matinees beginning January 5 and continuing on January 12, 19, 26 and February 9, with its much anticipated finale to be presented February 16. The reality competition will be presented to a live audience of 100 each Sunday.
Patterned after “an audition process”, the competition is geared to discovering new talent for the musical theatre stage. As has become the standard, 20 contestants will be selected from auditions to compete for the 2014 title, a $1000 cash award, a headlining engagement at Sterling’s Upstairs during the New Year, and other valuable prizes. Contestants selected from auditions to compete in the competition are subject to a one time entry fee of $400.
This year’s competition will once again be judged by a live audience and an overall panel of LA musical theatre’s most creative forces. Contestants will compete at each competition with no eliminations until the Finale on February 16, 2014. Following the final sing by all 20 contestants on February 16, the Finale will determine the selection of one winner and four top finalists. Additionally, the winner of LA’s Next Great Stage Star® 2014 and its four runners-up will also be awarded audition opportunities by LA based producers, directors and casting directors. Congratulations to USC student Jennifer Kranz, who was named the winner of LA’s Next Great Stage Star® 2014 competition last weekend at Sterling’s Upstairs at the Federal. Kranz is a senior at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles majoring in Theatre and minoring in Musical Theatre. The blonde, blue-eyed Jennifer Kranz began performing when she was 8 years old and has since studied with John Rubenstein, Gerogia Stitt and others at USC. Her win follows six weeks of intense competition conducted before live audiences who were also part of the voting process.
Additionally, the young Ms. Kranz will receive audition opportunities from such major, regional producing entities as Cabrillo Music Theatre which presents at the Fred Kavli Theatre in the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks, CA; Julia Flores Casting, which represents the Pasadena Playhouse, Boston Court Theatre and McCoy/Rigby Entertainment at the La Mirada Performing Arts Center; and other similar regional auditions.
Upon her return to Sterling’s later this year with her own concert, she will also receive an overnight stay in a Luxury VIP Suite and dining for two at the iconic Sheraton Universal Hotel. Known as the “Hotel of the Stars” for 45 years, the Sheraton is nestled between the Hollywood Hills and the San Fernando Valley and overlooks the world renowned Universal Studios. www.sheratonuniversal.com. The only competition of its kind, 8 former competitors have since made their Broadway debuts; one of whichis Derek Klena (top finalist/LA’s Next Great Stage Star 2011) who recently co-starred on Broadway as Fiyero in the 10th anniversary production of Wicked; and is currently co-starring in The Bridges of Madison County. Additionally, over 80 out of 160 former competitors are now working professionally in either U.S. National Tours, sit down productions in Las Vegas Hotels, major regional theatres productions, and television.

Compete in LA's Next Great Stage Star 2017!
Do you have what it takes to be LA’s Next Great Stage Star? If so, Stage Star 2017 is looking for you! Presented by Princess Cruises, the competition will hold auditions for 10 men and 10 women between the ages of 18 – 32 this Saturday, December 10th at the Colony Theatre in Burbank. An accompanist will be provided and attendees should be prepared to sing one up-tempo song and one ballad, both from Broadway musicals. This is the competition’s 11th consecutive year and offers a Grand Prize of $2500, professional theatrical representation, and other valuable prizes. Sixteen former Stage Star contestants have already made their Broadway and/or Off-Broadway debuts; while another 80+ are enjoying full time careers in musical theatre throughout the country and abroad. This is a great way to launch your career.

LA’s Next Great Stage Star® will be presented at the Colony Theatre as a series of five Sunday events: January 8, 15, 22, 29, and February 12; with its Grand Finale on February 19. An average of 50% of “all” contestants in each year’s edition of LA’s Next Great Stage Star® are signed by the competition’s musical theatre agent/judges.
The 2017 competition will be judged by a live *audience and an overall nearly two dozen member panel of LA musical theatre’s most dynamic creatives forces. LA’S Next Great Stage Star™ Competition Returns
Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's has set Saturday and Sunday, Dec 10 - 11 as audition dates for the 6th annual LA's Next Great Stage Star™ competition, announced today by producers Michael Sterling and Tony Monsour of Michael Sterling & Associates (http://www.msapr.net/).
Auditions are by appointment only and will be held between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm both days. The annual competition, which began in 2007, will be presented at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s located in Studio City, California’s trendy Tujunga Village as a series of six consecutive, early afternoon, Sunday matinees January 8 through February 12, 2012.

LA's Next Great Stage Star Competition Digs Deep with New Music

Contestants in LA’s Next Great Stage Star competition had an exciting second week on Sunday, January 12th. The theme for this round was Breaking New Ground – A Little New Music, and featured songs from some of today’s most up and coming musical theatre writers. Unlike the first week in which each singer chose his or her own material, a song was given to them to learn by associate producer and new musical theatre expert, Peter Welkin. Peter is part of the producing team for the cabaret series A Little New Music at Rockwell Table and Stage and has many years of experience developing musicals for the Academy of New Musical Theatre.
By its very nature, new music is less familiar than the standard catalogue of Broadway musical songs and that can make it challenging for a young singer appearing in front of a panel of judges for the first time. This week’s industry judges included TV, film & theatre casting director Michael Donavan, choreographer & director Lee Martino, and award-winning director David Galligan, who offered their professional opinions following each performance.
So how did the contestants do? At the end of the day Welkin said, “I think they did remarkably well. It was a mixed bag of responses from the audience and judges but I think that the singers got a lot of benefit out of it. Last week much of the feedback was about their acting. The judges commented that there was a lot of beautiful singing but they wanted them to think more about their interpretation: where’s this moment, where’s the emotion, who are you talking to… all of the acting homework you have to supply as the actor singing the song that makes it connect to an audience.
This week I thought they actually dug in deeper and found their acting moments much more clearly than they had before. I think the first week they were going on assumptions about how things should be played. This time they had to figure them out for themselves, and as a result, they received feedback on their performance in the room that was very specific. They weren’t being compared to anyone else who may have sung the song previously.”
Bryan Blaskie, music director for week 2, and also a producer & music director for A Little New Music, added that the experience was an unusual one for him. “I’ve had the privilege of already playing all of this new music as part of our Rockwell series but what’s weird is sitting at the piano while everyone is being critiqued. I’m watching the actors take all this information in, knowing the rehearsal we’ve put into their songs, and knowing whether or not the comments addressed things we worked on in rehearsal or if they were about something we didn’t even think about. A lot of times there were choices we made that directly contradicted the feedback from the judges. When I work with these actors in rehearsal I tell them these are all suggestions. You’re not going to please everybody so do what you think is best and go with it. We’re all going to disagree. You even saw some of the judges disagree with each other. With only 3½ minutes to impress the audience, every decision counts.”

LA’s Next Great Stage Star Competition® to Include Classics, New Music, and More
The competition has launched the careers of more than fifty rising musical theatre artists, many of whom have been cast in top regional theatre shows, Broadway national tours, Las Vegas productions, and network television shows. Eight of the contestants have also made their Broadway and Off-Broadway debuts.
All contestants will sing each week and will receive feedback from a panel of industry professionals. In addition to the panel of judges (which includes LA based producers, directors and casting directors), audience members will cast their votes in the categories of vocal and acting ability, stage presence, and personality. The musical focus changes weekly with a number of musical theatre styles featured so if you’d like to be in the audience, book your reservations now.

This year’s competition will once again be judged by a live audience and an overall panel of LA musical theatre’s most creative forces. Judges will give a live critique to each contestant every week. Audience members and Judges will also vote on vocal and acting ability, stage presence and personality. Interested talent may call Michael Sterling Publicity and Production at (818) 623-7300 x 2 to request an audition appointment on Sun. Dec. 14 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at Van Nuys’ Performing Arts Center, 7735 North Sepulveda Blvd. Auditions are by appointment only. A musical accompanist will be provided.
Directed by SparkleBlob founder Julianna Parr, the show is proof that puppets aren’t just for kids but for everyone. Children and adults of all ages delight in the show’s witty humor, satire, and sparkly action. The show includes before and after Chinatown sightseeing rides on the famed ‘trike’ plus delicious pre and after show treats and libations. Many of Los Angeles’s best known puppeteers and performers will be on stage - including Shannon Dedman, Rosalind Helfand, Monica Howe, Julianna Parr, Linda Santiman, Andrew Oropeza and Scott Russell Cheek. The DingleBell Hollies rock out this year with musicians Jason Myers, Coral Lobera, Joshua Fielstra, and Eric Potter. Tickets: www.sparkleblob.org.
On December 20 and 21, T.U. Studios will be filled with music, as the venue plays host to the musical revue, Liquid Love, just in time for the holiday. The show features love songs performed by established vocal stars including Lucy Walsh (daughter of The Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh); Chad Doreck (of the upcoming musical Serrano); and Gloria Gifford (WB recording contract singer plus national TV shows). INDIEGOGO: Doug Haverty (book/lyrics), Adryan Russ (music/lyrics), and Bruce Kimmel (director) have started a fundraising campaign to mount an anniversary production of their musical Inside Out (a musical about giving and getting support in an all-girl “group”) to commemorate the 20th anniversary and re-release/re-mastering of the Original Off Broadway Cast Recording. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation (for a Future Without Breast Cancer). The show will be a celebration of women supporting women with an all-female cast and all-female band. You can check out their campaign HERE and help them make it happen.
