The national touring production of Spring Awakening has arrived in LA, bringing its story of teenage angst and sexual awakening to the Pantages Theatre. The Tony Award®-winning musical has a limited run, which opened last night and plays through February 13th. [Tonight at 11:30 pm, following their regular performance, the cast will be doing a late night cabaret show at the M Bar in Hollywood to benefit The Trevor Project.]
Spring Awakening is based on the controversial play by Frank Wedekind that deals with the sexual coming-of-age of a group of young students in 19th century Germany. Today’s teens and parents may be a bit more open in their communication, but at the time Spring Awakening was written, sex, masturbation, rape, incest and homosexuality were not topics discussed in polite society, let alone behind closed doors.
This musical deals with them head on in an in-your-face unavoidable collision as raging hormones, lack of answers, and the frustration of living cause tragic consequences. Unfortunately, many of the same issues are still prevalent today. [Click Here for interview with Coby Getzug (Moritz)]
Spring Awakening features book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, with Michael Mayer’s original direction recreated by Lucy Skilbeck and Bill T. Jones’ original choreography recreated by JoAnn M. Hunter.
There is also a day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of $25 on-stage seats. Just go to the box office 2½ hours prior to show time to have your name placed in a lottery drum. Thirty minutes later, names are drawn for the on-stage tickets. The lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person, cash only. ID is required to purchase the tickets.
