The Broad Stage Announces 2011-2012 Season!
The Broad Stage announced its summer season and complete 2011-2012 season today at a press reception in Santa Monica.Showstoppers – From Broadway to The Broad this year will feature Jason Robert Brown (Parade, 13, Songs For a New World) and the Caucasian Rhythm & Brass Kings with special guest Anika Noni Rose (Caroline, or Change, Dreamgirls) on Saturday March 31, 2012, and versatile leading man Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime, Man of La Mancha) on Saturday and Sunday March 10-11, 2012.
Brown was one of today’s highlights, closing the event by performing a number that had been cut from one of his earlier shows. Always high energy and fantastic to see live, he also talked about some of his upcoming new works, including his musical collaboration with Marsha Norman on the new musical The Bridges of Madison County. Brown rarely performs in Los Angeles so don’t miss this exciting concert.
The Broad has also begun a new partnership with the Menier Chocolate Factory in London and will begin the summer season with The Expert at the Card Table, directed by Neil Patrick Harris, and written and performed by Guy Hollingworth July 13 – August 7, 2011. Hollingworth was the 2008 Magician of the Year and the story is an adaptation of a notorious, anonymously written 1902 book that has taken audiences completely by surprise in the UK.
Judith Owen & Harry Shearer are back with their Holiday Sing-a-long on Friday December 16, 2011. What began as a private gathering of friends and family in their Los Angeles home has become an international delight of music and mirth, complete with surprise guests. Previous Sing-A-Longs have featured guests like Jane Lynch (Glee), Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap) and “Weird” Al Yankovich. Join humorist Shearer (KCRW’s Le Show; The Simpsons) and Owen, his singer/songwriter wife, for their annual family-friendly holiday debauch
Today’s other special guest was Helen Hunt talking about her upcoming performance as the Stage Manager in Our Town, directed by David Cromer, coming January 13 – February 12, 2012. The Broad Stage will be physically transformed for this intimate interpretation of the classic Thornton Wilder play that ponders what it is truly is to be alive. It sounds like a 'don't miss" production!
These are only a few of the upcoming events that will be happening at The Broad Stage this year. You’ll also find theatrical productions such as The Comedy of Errors and Jane Austen Unscripted, jazz greats like Pat Methany, Joshua Redman, Hiromi, and the Brad Mehldau Trio, several Opera debuts, Chamber music and a wide range of special events.
