L.A. Premiere of The Color Purple on Celebration Theatre's 2011-12 Season
Celebration Theatre announces its first season under new artistic director John Michael Beck, which will feature the Los Angeles premiere of The Color Purple. Directed by Michael Matthews, the Tony Award-winning hit will open March 9, 2012. This is an up-close and intimate look at the lives of Celie, Shug and the cast of characters you've grown to know and love. The season will begin wtih What’s Wrong With Angry, written by Patrick Wilde and directed by Michael Matthews opening September 9, 2011. It was written at a time in British history when the age of consent for homosexuals was 5 years older than heterosexuals. Legislation, called Section 28, prohibited schools and local authorities from depicting homosexual relationships as an acceptable view of family life. While school was a setting for romance with Mr. Popular, John Westhead, Steven Carter spent his life at home telling his parents what they wanted to hear. His fortunes take an unexpected turn when he discovers that his feelings for John are reciprocated; however, what's one to do when your family, school and country tell you your love isn't acceptable? In order to discover "it gets better", sometimes you gotta get ANGRY!
A new take on the classic Design For Living by Noel Coward is next on the schedule, opening November 11, 2011. In this classic ménage-a-trois by a master of the sophisticated, Noel Coward, Gilda and Otto are living a bohemian lifestyle, she as a dilettante, he as a painter. A visit by Leo, Otto's old friend and a successful playwright leads to an affair that upsets everyone’s lives and leads to years of emotional turmoil.
2012 begins with world premiere of Leslie Jordan in Stories I Can’t Tell Mama opening January 6th. Jordan’s one-man show is a lively romp that weaves tales about growing up in the South with his very own, hysterical observations and celebrity secrets.
