The Big Time comes to La Jolla Playhouse
La Jolla Playhouse will present a new musical, The Big Time, this fall November 10 – December 20, 2009. It features book by Douglas Carter Beane, who returns to the Playhouse following 2008’s Xanadu, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. He is also the author of The Little Dog Laughed, which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2007. Music and lyrics are by Douglas J. Cohen, who wrote book, music and lyrics for No Way To Treat a Lady, currently enjoying a successful run at the Colony Theatre in Burbank. Show will be directed by Christopher Ashley, La Jolla’s artistic director
Plot follows two down-on-their-luck lounge singers who set sail on a G8 cruise ship for one last chance at success. When the ship is taken hostage by terrorists intent on destroying the world, romance and mistaken identities abound as hostages become heroes and radicals become hoofers in this sparkly new tuner.
The Big Time was first seen in 2005 as part of the New York Music Theatre Festival and is rumored for an eventual run on Broadway. La Jolla Playhouse subscriber pre-sale begins July 6, with single tickets available July 12. http://www.lajollaplayhouse.com/
