Old Black Magic: A Haunted Musical
After a 5 year hiatus Olio Theatre Works' original musical comedy Old Black Magic: A Haunted Musical returns with all of the sparkling magic, voodoo charm, heartfelt discoveries and toe-tappin' show tunes that helped make it a hit with audiences for 6 years running! Set in the misty bayous of Louisiana on the night of the "Devil's Moon", this OTW classic features the celebrity ghosts of John Barrymore, Jayne Mansfield, Edgar Allen Poe, Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, (and more!), and follows them through a dark night of limbo as each decides whether to cast off their "past life issues" and move onto the great unknown, or remain in limbo forever. Opening Night: The Improvised Musical
Now in its fourteenth year, Opening Night: The Improvised Musical! creates a Broadway-style musical made up on the spot, based on audience suggestions, every night. Led by director Shulie Cowen, Opening Night combines the Chicago-style improvisation of the iO and The Second City with the Broadway stylings of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Gilbert & Sullivan, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bob Fosse, and many more. It stars Shulie Cowen, Derek Miller, Hilary Rowe, Norm Thoeming, Matt L. Jones, Mark McConville, and Michael Pollock. The Jeff Thomson Songbook
On Friday, October 19, come on down to the M-Bar in Hollywood for an all-star evening featuring songs with music by award winning New York City (formerly of LA) composer Jeff Thomson. Selections include material from the upcoming musicals Jawbreaker, Pump Up the Volume and Trails. Performers include pop sensation JoJo, Broadway's Jessica Snow Wilson and Rena Strober, South Park's Kate Pazakis, Hart in Dixie's Deborah S. Craig, Los Angeles favorites Alistair Tober and Elizabeth Brackenbury, as well as a special appearance by the original cast of the Los Angeles hit Trails. Musical direction by Brian P. Kennedy. Death of a Salesgirl
And while not a musical, there’s an intriguing world premiere coming up at Bootleg Theater. Death of a Salesgirl, an absurdist tragicomedy with integrated media about one woman’s struggle to free herself from her past, opens Saturday, October 13 and runs through November 17. Previews are October 11th and 12. Written by Patricia Scanlon, Death of a Salesgirl is a dark and humorous parable of a salesgirl breaking in new territory.  This intensely creative interdisciplinary performance piece, directed by Matthew McCray and starring Scanlon and Paul Dillon, incorporates video projections, animation and a uniquely crafted set by the award-winning Francois-Pierre Couture.
