Hold on to your hats, folks, La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and McCoy Rigby Entertainment are opening a brand-new musical this weekend based on the beloved 1993 film by Mark Steven Johnson and it looks like it’s going to be terrific. Matt Lenz directs Hal Linden who plays Grandpa Gustafson, Cathy Rigby as Punky Barrels, and Ken Page as Chuck Barrels in this west coast premiere by Dan Remmes (book), Neil Berg (music), Nick Meglin (lyrics), with additional orchestrations by Phil Reno, choreography by Michele Lynch, and musical direction by Benet Braun. Max (Gregory North) and John (Mark Jacoby) have been feuding for more than 50 years over the silliest things but when the beautiful Ariel (Leslie Stevens) moves in across the street their rivalry reaches epic proportions. This story of family, friendship, love, and romance is sure to win your heart. Audience Talk-Backs with the cast will take place on Sept. 25 and Oct. 9. Show runs Sept. 20 – Oct. 13. The Colony Theatre’s It’s Showtime! series will feature The Lion King’s Tonoccus McClain and special guests Jonathan Byram, Katherine Eames, and Destiny Lofton in a self-reflecting musical journey through the influences of musical theatre, jazz, pop, gospel, and other surprises this month. The piece is written by McClain and Alex Dueben and will run for four performances Sept. 26 – 29. Also on Sept. 21st, the new musical comedy Life in Boobs debuts at Second City Hollywood. The show is conceived by Jennifer Goodman and highlights the true trials and tribulations of boobs everywhere, with original songs, comedic vignettes and dramatic monologues, books & lyrics by Casey Christensen, and music by celebrity vocal coach Rachael Lawrence. Cast members include Sherry Cola, Brooke Eyler, Naomi Murden, Sara Montgomery, Leslie Rubino, and Kyla Page Williams along with Christensen and Goodman. Storybook Theatre’s version of Beatrix Potter’s classic tale hops into Theatre West beginning Oct. 5. With book and lyrics by Anthony Grupposo, who also directs, music by Matt Dahan, and choreography by Mark Michello, it’s a musical adventure for the whole family. Cast includes Alex Mashikian, Ashley Fox Linton, Kathy Garrick, Saratoga Ballantine, Will Collyer, and David P. Johnson. Come do “The Bunny Hop” and sing along with Peter and the rest of the audience in this adaptation created specifically to appeal to children. Audition Update: Don't Tell Mama L.A., Avenue Q, The Sound of Music
Don’t Tell Mama Auditions
The New York City institution Don’t Tell Mama is coming to Los Angeles and holding Open Call Auditions for performance staff for its new west coast branch. Needed are dynamic, determined, high energy men and women with wit, charm & star quality just waiting to be discovered. Auditions will take place on Wednesday, January 16 from 7:00 am - Noon at Don’t Tell Mama, 8279 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA. Artistic Director Ryan O’Connor is looking for talented bartenders, waiters, hosts, managers, Broadway inclined, classically trained, and the just too-damn-hot to ignore talents that are lurking in this city, waiting for a big break. They provide a stage, a mic, a nightly audience of industry insiders, and a paycheck. You provide an experience that their guests will talk about tomorrow and remember forever.
Auditions are on a first come, first served basis so get there early. Bring 3 copies of your headshot/resume and prepare 32 bars (approximately 2 minutes) of a Show Tune, Standard, or Contemporary/Classic Pop Hit. Piano accompaniment will be provided, but you must bring your own sheet music in the key you wish to sing. No transposition will be possible at the audition. If you have multiple appropriate audition selections, please choose the one that best shows off your abilities, but bring your book and be prepared to sing others. Santa Monica’s Morgan-Wixson Theatre is holding Non-Equity auditions for Avenue Q on Sunday, January 13 from 1-5 pm and Monday, January 14 from 6-9 pm. The show will be directed by Kevin Noonchester and music directed by Anne Gesling. Avenue Q runs March 9 - April 6, 2013, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm.
These auditions will consist of singing only. Callbacks will be held Saturday, January 19 from 1:00 to 6:00. You will be notified by e-mail if you are called back for reading and puppetry work. You MUST be available for the callbacks in order to be considered for the show. Prepare 2 contrasting songs of 32 bars each from contemporary musical theatre. One song may be from the show. San Diego Musical Theatre announces auditions for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music directed by Todd Nielsen, with Don LeMaster as musical director. The Mother Abbess (late 40's-early 60s) Head of Nonnberg Abbey. Strong yet supportive and kind in her guidance of Maria. Mezzo-Soprano.
Sister Berthe (30s - early 50s) Mistress of Novices. Serious and more strict than the other nuns.
Sister Margaretta (30's - early 50s) Mistress of Postulants. Gentler, kinder with a love of life and good sense of humor.
Sister Sophia (mid-20s - mid 40s) A sister at the Abbey. A good soul. Open minded to either of the other two nuns point of view.
Captain Georg von Trapp (40s - early 50s) Handsome well respected retired naval officer and widower. Stern, strict. Runs his household like a military unit. Cut off emotionally from loss of his wife eventually renewed by the presence of Maria. Baritone.
Franz (mid-30s - 50s) The Von Trapp’s butler previously the Captain’s orderly in the navy. Non-singing role.
Frau Schmidt (40s - late 50s) The Von Trapp's housekeeper. Efficient, spirited and good at her job. Eventually won over by Maria.

Theatre of NOTE caps off its 2012 season with the 10th Anniversary production of A Mulholland Christmas Carol, written by Bill Robens and directed by Alina Phelan. AMCC tells the story of the birth of Los Angeles by casting water baron William Mulholland in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a California-set Christmas Carol. The musical rendition of the LA water wars with Owens Valley mixes harmonies, history and humor, and will provide an acoustical, bluegrass take on the music. The show runs Nov. 28 – Dec. 23 with an official opening on Friday, Nov. 30 at 8pm.
There will also be two special performances, sponsored by the Metabolic Studios and hosted by the Friends of Inyo, at Bishop Union High School, 301 North Fowler Street, Bishop, CA 93514 on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8pm, and Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2pm. Crazy for You to open June 30 at Morgan-Wixson Theatre
Bobby’s a New Yorker who wants to be a musical star, but instead is a banker. His domineering mother sends him out to Deadrock, Nevada (a dusty cowboy town that’s seen better days) to foreclose on the mortgaged Gaiety Theatre. Once he arrives, he promptly falls head over heels for the theatre owner’s lovely daughter, who despises him because he’s the banker. Devising a plan to win her heart, he disguises himself as Zangler, the famous Broadway producer, come to Deadrock to put on a big musical to revive and save the endangered theatre, returning gaiety to The Gaiety.
This musical’s got it all: Leggy showgirls, singing cowboys, dancing, romance, and the great songs of the Gershwins, including “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “Embraceable You,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Shall We Dance?” and many, many more.
Director/musical director is Anne Gesling. She has previously served as director or musical director on over 70 productions for the Morgan-Wixson over a period of 26 years, most recently serving as musical director on its acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd. She served on the theatre’s board of directors for 20 years. Choreography is by Krystal Combs and the show is produced by Meredith Wright. Technical director/set design is by Tom Brown. Lighting design is by William Wilday.
The cast includes Peter Schueller as Bobby and Krystal Combs as Polly, along with Michelle Akeley, Lauren Blair, Alan Charof, Holly Childers, Steve Hall, Sheldon Morley, Danielle Morris Weber, Eileen O’Donnell, Roy Okida, Marc Ostroff, Shaina Zalma Ostroff, Alex Pierdant, Laura Sheehan, Chris Siciliano, Susan Stangl and Steve Weber.

Morgan-Wixson Announces Cast of Sweeney Todd
Rachelle, whose previous directorial credits with Morgan-Wixson Theatre include Urinetown and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, brings a dark re-imagining of the tale for her 21st Century audience. Set in the 18th Century, Sweeney Todd is the tale of a man determined to seek vengeance and is based on London’s urban legend with several stage adaptations dating as far back as 1847.
John McCool Bowers stars as Sweeney, with AnnaLisa Erickson as Mrs. Lovett. Natasha Harris is Johanna, Vincent Perez is Anthony, and Michael Heimos is Turpin. The cast also includes Matthew Artson, Carolyn Freeman Champ, Joanna Churgin, Ayelet Firstenberg, Steven Flowers, Jim Goodrich, Tom McMahon, Lucas Moore, Sheldon Morley, Danielle Morris, Yassi Noubahar, Eileen O’Donnell, Daniella Painton, Brandon Stanford, John David Wallis and James Paul Xavier.

Morgan-Wixson Theatre’s Y.E.S. program presents Seussical by Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty, Nov. 12 – Dec. 17.
Welcome to the fantastical world of Dr. Seuss, which highlights the adventures of Horton the Elephant, along with a host of characters from Dr. Seuss’s beloved classics, such as The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, The Whos down in Whoville and Circus McGurkus. If you believe in helping a friend, in not giving up, in keeping a promise and the power of pure imagination, this is the show for you and your whole family!
Seussical is based on the works of Dr. Seuss, with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and book by Ahrens & Flaherty, and is co-conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty & Eric Idle.
Anne Gesling will direct/musical direct the production that features 38 members of the Y.E.S. youth program. Morgan-Wixson presents The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone
Morgan-Wixson Theatre Youth Education/Entertainment Series (YES) presents The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone, a guest production by Rogue Artist Assemble September 24 - October 9, 2011. It is based on the book written and illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering and adapted for the stage by Emily Coalson with Rogue Artists Ensemble.
In Cementland lives a very special Boy with a singular wish to find a treasure. Amidst heaping piles of greasy toaster ovens, broken TVs, and wet smelly socks, he discovers a rusty old box promising wondrous riches, but all he finds inside the box are tiny grey specks. Even his new friends Rat, Rabbit, and Fruit Fly don't know how to make treasure out of specks. Frustrated, the Boy leaves the box and the treasure unprotected. Thieves come in the night and the Boy builds a monster called Frog Belly Rat Bone to scare them away. Frog Belly protects the specks, and in doing so teaches all the friends a very valuable lesson.
Using their signature Hyper-theatrical style combining puppetry, music, video projections, and innovative prop design, the award-winning Rogue Artists Ensemble brings this popular book's lovable characters and quirky aesthetic to life on stage.

Morgan-Wixson Theatre to Premiere Family Musical, Thank You Mr. Falker
Based on Patricia Polacco’s popular picture book Thank You, Mr. Falker, the story is about Polacco’s struggle with dyslexia and the teacher who helped her to blossom and eventually triumph. Now it has been adapted into a family musical presented with humor and embedded with lessons about bullying, individuality, perseverance, and the joy of reading.
The production is directed by Lane Williamson, choreographed by Christopher Albrecht, with set design by Anthony Soto and costume design by Sara Fanto. The show is best enjoyed by ages 5 and up.
Thank You, Mr. Falker will run Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 am May 14 - 29, 2011. There will be audience talkbacks after the performances on May 14 and 21.
