International City Theatre has announced its 2011 season, which will include two musicals - the West Coast Premiere of Loving Repeating…A Musical of Gertrude Stein and The Robber Bridegroom. The complete line-up and dates are:

Loving, Repeating…A Musical of Gertrude Stein
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Lyrics by Gertrude Stein
Adapted by Frank Galati
January 18 – February 13, 2011

Loving Repeating is a musical about many things – loving life, loving thinking, loving making art and loving love. What it ultimately achieves as a musical is something rare – a work of flowing imagination and intense beauty evoking story through music the way that Stein might have written it. We meet the young Stein as her fertile imagination is sparked into passion and love. The score follows her life and love as a series of vaudeville acts – with homage to soft-shoe, opera, European cabaret and other ex citing period and modern sounds. Along the way, we ride through a perplexing, exhilarating, hilarious, and emotionally giddy musical as unique as Stein herself.

Southern Comforts
By Kathleen Clark
March 15 – April 10, 2011

This off-Broadway hit romantic comedy is a beautiful exploration of the tour-de-force journey of a widow and widower who meet later in life and find a way into each other’s hearts. Their funny, awkward, and enchanting romance is filled with sweet surprises and unpredictable tribulation.

The Old Settler
By John Henry Redwood
May 31 – June 26, 2011

Dashed hopes and the simplicity of human survival will always make the stuff of drama, as will a last chance at love. The Old Settler is a poignant, sweet-natured comedy about life in Harlem in 1943. It follows the relationship of two aging, church-going sisters and what happens when a handsome young fellow, newly arrived from the Deep South, rents a room in the apartment they share.

Private Lives
By Noel Coward
August 23 – September 18, 2011

Noel Coward’s stylish, savvy comedy about the people we can’t live with – or without. Divorcees Amanda and Elyot meet up again quite by accident while on their second honeymoons, with brand-new spouses in tow. Love and passion abound in the eyes of four hilariously mismatched lovers.

The Robber Bridegroom
Book & Lyrics by Alfred Uhry
Music by Robert Waldman
Based on the novella by Eudora Welty
October 11 - November 6, 2011

A rousing, bawdy fairy tale set in the yesteryears of Mississippi, The Robber Bridegroom is the story of the courting of Rosamund, the only daughter of the richest planter in the country, by Jamie Lockhart, a rascally robber of the woods. The proceedings go awry, thanks to an unconventional case of double-mistaken identity. Throw in an evil stepmother intent on Rosamund’s demise, her pea-brained henchman and a hostile talking head-in-a-trunk, and you have the recipe for a rollicking romp.
