TELEVISION: KCET will present two shows for musical fans this week. On Thurs, June 3, 2014 at 10:00 pm, they will air A Broadway Lullaby, a new documentary from award-winning director Barbara Rick. The documentary provides an unprecedented inside look at Broadway’s brightest performers, all uniting to combat breast cancer through the beauty and power of music and art. The film captures the inspiration, rehearsals, recordings and creative process of artists including Victoria Clark, Raul Esparza, Sutton Foster, Marva Hicks, Nikki M. James, Judy Kuhn, Rebecca Luker, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Laura Osnes, Vanessa Williams, Charles Randolph-Wright, Stephen Schwartz, David Shire, and Jules, and musicians Larry Campbell, Dave Eggar, Taylor Eigsti, Gil Goldstein, Fred Hersch, Julian Lage, and many more. Then on Friday, June 6 at 8:30 pm, Dialogue With Doti, hosted by Chapman University president Jim Doti, will debut. The talk show profiles today’s leaders in business, science, the arts and more. Doti’s first episode features four-time Tony Award®-winning playwright Terrence McNally (Master Class, Ragtime, Kiss of the Spider Woman). McNally will share stories and memories of his life and discusses his play Mothers and Sons which has been nominated for a Tony Award®.

The musical film is by Jacob William, a recent Goldsmiths University graduate, and is produced by Seth Chan and directed by Bella Barlow. Don’t Let Go tells the story of Tom (played by William) who, after a car accident leaves him in a wheelchair, fights to save the girl he loves (Annie Kirkman) from an abusive relationship (Roy Ryan). Featuring ten original songs performed live and characters like a reggae-singing Grandma (played by Juliette Kaplan of BBC’s Last Of The Summer Wine), Don’t Let Go is a heartwarming and heartbreaking story about embracing life and love in the face of sheer adversity. SEARCH FOR NEW MUSICALS: July 15 is the submission deadline for ANMT’s annual Search for New Musicals. Entries are accepted from around the globe and winners receive awards worth up to $25,000 in workshop productions, concert readings, feedback, and developmental support. All entries will receive constructive dramaturgical feedback, and will be entered in the Search contest. The winner of the 2014 Search will be announced by November 15, and will receive a workshop with the Academy Repertory Company, detailed feedback from the ANMT staff, and will be given a concert reading in Los Angeles. OPENINGS: Pasadena Playhouse has announced its 2014-15
season, which includes the critically acclaimed Stop
Kiss (Nov. 4-30), by Diana Son, directed by Seema Sueko; Sleeping
Beauty, Panto at the Playhouse (Dec. 10 – Jan 4), by Kris Lythgoe, directed by
Bonnie Lythgoe. This is an updated version of the classic story in the style of
the traditional British family Panto which features
family-friendly magic, a comedic twist and contemporary music.; Two

demand Gene Kelly: The Legacy, An Evening with Patricia Ward Kelly for

widow, biographer and the person who knew him best - presents an intimate
portrait of this dynamic and innovative artist who created some of the most

personal memorabilia, and insights culled from her hours of interviews and

Out of the Box Theatre Company will present an intimate
black box production of Bonnie &
Clyde the Musical at Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara April 3 – 13, bringing
it to Southern California for the first time since its world premiere at La
Jolla Playhouse prior to its Broadway run. The musical features a Tony
Award-nominated score by Frank Wildhorn and Don Block, and a book by Ivan
Menchell. The cast features recent PCPA alum Lafras le Roux as Clyde Barrow and
Santa Barbara actress Katherine Bottoms as Bonnie Parker, with William
Schneiderman (Buck Barrow), Samantha Eve (Blanche Barrow), Deborah Bertling,

Robeson will resume performances at Ebony Repertory Theatre on Friday,
March 21. Two-time Emmy Award-winner Keith David stars in this one-man
play with music, returning to the stage after recovering from a knee injury. Accompaniment
is by pianist/musical director Byron J. Smith and choreography is by Keith
Young. The production will continue through Sunday, March 30, which was
part of the previously announced schedule. Three additional performances are
set for Friday and Saturday, April 18 & 19 at 8:00 pm; and Sunday,
April 20 at 7:00 pm. Paul Robeson plays at the Nate Holden Performing Arts
Center (4718 West Washington Boulevard) in Los Angeles. A powerful
chronicle of the life of Paul Robeson, Phillip Hayes Dean’s play takes us from
his childhood in New Jersey to his adult life around the world. An All-American
athlete and a lawyer with Columbia Law School credentials, Robeson faces the
racism prevalent in society in the early part of the twentieth century. He
strives to rise above, and it is his triumph in that struggle that turns

The Grove Theatre announces The Kingdom, A Rock Musical,
for 6 performances only running on weekends April 25 – May 4. Starring
Richard Bermudez as Jesus, The Kingdom is a high energy, Rock, Hip-Hop, Gospel
& Pop version of the Passion of Jesus Christ (think Jesus Christ
Superstar), that focuses on the life, trial, execution & resurrection of
Jesus of Nazareth. Through dramatic storytelling, dynamic modern music,
authentic costumes and realistic sets, this gritty retelling of the greatest
story ever told brings to musical life the last week of Jesus of Nazareth.
Although The Kingdom chronicles the story of Christ’s trial and

Chance Theater has announced 26 hours of live performances for its 24hr Chance-a-thon, which will take place on Saturday, March 22 from 10am-11pm, and Sunday, March 23 from 9am-10pm. LIVE EVENTS: Cabrillo Music Theatre celebrates its upcoming production of In the Heights with Carnaval De Cabrillo on January 12. Modeled after the “Carnaval del Barrio” that plays a pivotal role in the show, Carnaval De Cabrillo unites enthusiastic young people, dancers of all ages, city officials, community leaders and local businesses for a free afternoon of dance, music, food and fun. Carnaval will take place from Noon to 5:00 pm in Carpenter Park, directly outside Cabrillo Music Theatre’s home venue, the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.The event will feature a live participatory demonstration by the entire community of a dance from In the Heights using the original Tony Award-Winning Broadway Choreography of Andy Blankenbuehler, and taught by Cabrillo’s director-choreographer, Morgan Marcell. Participants may sign up in advance at http://carnavaldecabrillo.rsvpify.com/ or in person on the day of the event. The choreography will be taught at all skill levels, allowing for full participation from anyone who wants to learn. Participants can show up at any time from Noon to 1:30 pm and learn the moves. The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer will air on ABC 7 at 7:00 pm, Sunday, Dec. 22. You can also watch The Polar Express on ABC Family at 8:00 pm, Monday, Dec. 23.
FILMS: The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood will host a special engagement of the Sing-A-Long version of Disney’s classic Mary Poppins, January 10 – 20. Audiences are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters from the film, and sing along to the classic soundtrack as the words to the songs are projected up on the screen. There will also be a costume contest on opening night and other special opening night surprises. El Capitan guests may also go “Behind the scenes” of the making of Mary Poppins with rarely seen unit photography from the Walt Disney Archives and a special “Walking On Cherry Tree Lane” photo opportunity on display throughout the run. In addition, January 14 is Tiny Tot Tuesday. During the 10:00 am performance parents and small children can enjoy the movie in a Tiny Tot-friendly way, with lights dimmed rather than out and reduced sound levels. Daily showtimes are 10:00 am, 1:15 pm, 4:30 pm, and 7:45pm. Special General Admission ticket price of $10 includes popcorn. CONCERTS/CABARET: Color and Light Theatre Ensemble will bring a one-night presentation of Joe Iconis’ Things to Ruin to Southern California on January 11 at 9:00 pm. The theatrical rock concert is an incendiary collection of songs by Kleban and Larson Award Winner Joe Iconis (SMASH, The Black Suits and Bloodsong of Love) about human beings who are messy, emotional, drugged up, knocked down, inspired, electric and who don’t have nearly enough time to cause the kind of commotion they so desperately need to cause. Featuring direction and musical staging by Joanna Syiek, with musical direction by Jennifer Lin, the cast includes Emily Arkuss, Jeff Buco, Ben Burch, Samantha Eve, Ari Gwasdoff, Josh Hillinger, Tyler Ledon, Katharine McDonough, Jamie Mills, Kelsey Schulte, and Kristofer Sundquist. TELEVISION: Six By Sondheim, the final film in HBO’s Fall Documentary Series will debut on Monday, December 9th (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT). Directed by Tony Award-winner and frequent Steven Sondheim collaborator James Lapine, Six By Sondheim is a highly personal profile of a great American artist as revealed through the creation and performance of six of his iconic songs. Told primarily in Sondheim’s own words, this feature documentary weaves together dozens of interviews with the composer, rarely seen archival material spanning more than half a century (including newly discovered footage of Ethel Merman performing Gypsy) and re-stagings of three songs produced especially for the film.
Showcase performances by Broadway and Hollywood stars such as Audra McDonald (Porgy and Bess), Darren Criss (Glee), Jeremy Jordan (Newsies) and America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) are interspersed with archival performances of Sondheim standards by stars like Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, Dean Jones, Yvonne de Carlo and Larry Kert. A Little New Music presents its final event of 2013 at Rockwell: Table & Stage on Tuesday, December 10. The Grove Theatre presents Great Joy – A Christmas Celebration on Sunday, December 22 at 6 pm.
