MUSICAL NEWS: La Jolla Playhouse will mount the world premiere of Up Here, a new musical comedy featuring book, music and lyrics by the husband-and-wife composing team of Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Disney World’s Finding Nemo: The Musical). Up Here will be directed by Tony Award nominee Alex Timbers and will be part of the Playhouse’s 2015/16 season (dates TBA). The musical follows Dan, an ordinary guy with a boring social life, an unused gym membership and a lot going on upstairs. When he finds a potential spark with Lindsay, his attempts at love are jeopardized by his chaotic subconscious mind. The Festival of New American Musicals has launched its 7th season, recommending a record 13 new musicals and events in the month of June. Many of them have been featured here on Musicals in LA as well. They are:

The Grove Theatre will open Oklahoma! this Sat., May 31 and run for 8 performances through Sunday June 15. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece about a romantic rivalry on the Western frontier boasts a collection of classic songs and a spirit that has made it an enduring favorite. San Diego Musical Theatre will present Next to Normal directed by Nick DeGruccio, starring Bets Malone (Diana), Robert Townsend (Dan) and Eddie Egan (Gabe), Sept.26 - Oct. 12 at the North Park Theatre. The Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness as Diane Goodman struggles with bipolar disorder. Tickets: www.sdmt.org.

 TELEVISION: KCET will present two shows for musical fans this week. On Thurs, June 3, 2014 at 10:00 pm, they will air A Broadway Lullaby, a new documentary from award-winning director Barbara Rick. The documentary provides an unprecedented inside look at Broadway’s brightest performers, all uniting to combat breast cancer through the beauty and power of music and art. The film captures the inspiration, rehearsals, recordings and creative process of artists including Victoria Clark, Raul Esparza, Sutton Foster, Marva Hicks, Nikki M. James, Judy Kuhn, Rebecca Luker, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Laura Osnes, Vanessa Williams, Charles Randolph-Wright, Stephen Schwartz, David Shire, and Jules, and musicians Larry Campbell, Dave Eggar, Taylor Eigsti, Gil Goldstein, Fred Hersch, Julian Lage, and many more.  The documentary will also stream online at www.kcet.org.  Then on Friday, June 6 at 8:30 pm, Dialogue With Doti, hosted by Chapman University president Jim Doti, will debut. The talk show profiles today’s leaders in business, science, the arts and more. Doti’s first episode features four-time Tony Award®-winning playwright Terrence McNally (Master Class, Ragtime, Kiss of the Spider Woman). McNally will share stories and memories of his life and discusses his play Mothers and Sons which has been nominated for a Tony Award®.

 YOUTUBE: News from across the pond - Episode one if Don’t Let Go is now available on YouTube. The musical film is by Jacob William, a recent Goldsmiths University graduate, and is produced by Seth Chan and directed by Bella Barlow. Don’t Let Go tells the story of Tom (played by William) who, after a car accident leaves him in a wheelchair, fights to save the girl he loves (Annie Kirkman) from an abusive relationship (Roy Ryan). ANMT NEWS: The Academy for New Musical Theatre presents three brand new 15-minute musicals on June 23 and 24 at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood. The annual 15 Minute Musicals are a decades-long tradition at ANMT and conclude each season’s Core Curriculum of the writers’ workshop, which has been in existence for over 40 years. This season’s theme is Can’t Get Enough: three short musicals about addiction. Shows featured includes The Lover: A Tale of Obsessive Love by Grace Jasmine (book & lyrics) and Ron Barnett (music), Smartest Zombie at Harvard by Bryon Richards (book), Natalie Elder (lyrics) and Marc Macalintal (music); and Spoilers! by Mitch Glaser (book), Mike Shapiro (lyrics) and Erik Przytulski (music).  SEARCH FOR NEW MUSICALS: July 15 is the submission deadline for ANMT’s annual Search for New Musicals. Entries are accepted from around the globe and winners receive awards worth up to $25,000 in workshop productions, concert readings, feedback, and developmental support. All entries will receive constructive dramaturgical feedback, and will be entered in the Search contest. The winner of the 2014 Search will be announced by November 15, and will receive a workshop with the Academy Repertory Company, detailed feedback from the ANMT staff, and will be given a concert reading in Los Angeles. AWARDS: The Nederlander Organization and Hollywood Pantages Theatre have announced the winners of the 3rd Annual Jerry Herman Awards. KABC 7 Eyewitness News Entertainment Reporter George Pennacchio served as the master of ceremonies for the evening. Grand prize winners include Joshua Velez from HArts Academy (Pippin) and Ayla Stackhouse from Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual & Performing Arts (In The Heights). Best actor & actress runners up are Sawyer Patterson from John Burroughs High School, Kelsey Smith from Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, Nick Sparks from Oakwood High School and Julia McDermott from Mira Costa High School. Notre Dame Academy’s Luelle Robles won the “No Small Parts” Award for her role in Hairspray.

Sierra Madre Playhouse will present Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers May 16 – June 21, directed and adapted by Alison Eliel Kalmus, with musical direction by Leonardo Sciolis and choreography by Angela Nicholas. The Gala opening night performance on Friday, May 16 will be followed by a Champagne reception and light buffet. This new adaptation of The Gondoliers re-sets the action to the U.K. in 1952 and follows a company of Savoyards who plan a production of The Gondoliers for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Missing props, sets and costumes just two days before opening inject enough randomness into the proceedings that would make Noises Off seem like a quiet stroll in the garden. MUSICALS: Rubicon Theatre in Ventura becomes Holiday Central this month with a sparkling array of more than 35 shows and events for all ages. Holiday Central launches on Friday, Nov. 29 with A Rubicon Family Christmas Concert, a musical revue of classic and contemporary songs-of-the-season conceived and directed by Brian McDonald and featuring Broadway stars along with a chorus of talented young singers. The production continues through Dec. 8. Also on the schedule is Little Miss Scrooge, a lovely new musical that sets the love story from Great Expectations and the ghost story from A Christmas Carol against the backdrop of the small town, recession-hit Pickwick, Ohio. Created by Paul Gordon, Sam Caird and John Caird, it runs Dec. 18 - 23 and features a cast of 15, including Rebecca Ann Johnson and Andrew Samonsky. Rubicon’s downstairs rehearsal room will also be magically transformed into Santa’s Village, and Rubicon elves will help arrange family photos with Santa, Frosty and Rudolph (bring cameras!). On the weekends, a professional caroling group (The Tinseltones) will appear in Dickensian costumes to serenade visitors, and Rubicon’s Merry Elves will perform 30-minute Tiny Tots concerts. A holiday boutique in the Village will feature one-of-a-kind, hand-made gifts by local artists, and gift certificates for tickets to Rubicon season shows will be available for purchase. The Norris Center for the Performing Arts is celebrating the spirit of the season with the sparkling holiday musical, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Dec. 6 – 15. Based on the classic 1954 film starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, this lavish romantic comedy is an all-singing, all-dancing evening of theatre that includes many of the greatest songs ever written, and even a live snowfall on stage. The illustrious Irving Berlin score includes such timeless songs as “Blue Skies,” “Sisters,” “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing,” “Snow” and “White Christmas.” The production features a cast of 24 performers and stars Brent Schindele as Bob Wallace, David Lamoureux as Phil Davis, Gail Ellen Bennett as Betty Haynes, Tro Shaw as Judy Haynes, Polly Seale as Martha Watson, Michael Prohaska as General Waverly and Ashley Reynolds as Susan Waverly. Chance Theater presents The Secret Garden – The Musical with book and lyrics by Marsha Norman, music by Lucy Simon, and directed by Casey Long and KC Wilkerson, Nov. 29 – Dec. 29. The enchanting classic is based on the popular novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Orphaned in India, an 11 year old girl returns to Yorkshire to live with an embittered, reclusive uncle and his invalid son. Her own personality blossoms as she and a young gardener bring new life to a neglected garden. This Tony Award winner is a treasure for children and adults alike.  The Academy for New Musical Theatre presents a Concert Reading of the new musical City of Light Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 7:30pm at the Colony Theatre, Burbank. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
Chance Theater presents the hilarious and irreverent emo rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson by Alex Timbers, with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, and directed by Kari Hayter. The show begins previews on July 5, opens July 12 and continues through August 4. Part history, part rock concert, and part SNL sketch comedy satire, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson reimagines and reinvents the life of “Old Hickory” from childhood to maverick president. Chance is reconfiguring their theater into a grungy Wild West tavern for this fiery musical, and it features many of the artists from last season’s hit musical West Side Story. ANMT presents its annual 15 minute Musicals on Monday June 24 at 7:30 pm entitled Haves and Have Nots: Four Short Musicals about Inequality written by John Aaron, Joel Adlen, Ron Barnett, Ben Boquist, Brian Graden, David Anthony Hall, David Haworth, Denis McCourt, R.K. Rich, and Robert Rosen starring Nikki Jenkins, Kevin Noonchester, Rachel Tyler, and Peter Welkin. They are directed by Scott Guy with musical direction by Jake Anthony. DOMA Theatre Company Sponsors Fringe Musical Award
DOMA Theatre Company has announced it will sponsor the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival’s “Best Fringe Festival Musical” award, to be accompanied by a $1,000 check designated for further development of the winning production. DOMA staff members will attend and rate Fringe Festival musicals in ten overall categories, including music/lyrics, book, direction, choreography and acting, as well as set, costume, lighting, sound and prop design. The highest score will determine the winning production, to be announced at the closing festivities on June 30. “We see this as a way to give back to the local theater community,” says DOMA executive producer Marco Gomez. A joint venture between DOlf Ramos and MArco Gomez, DOMA has carved a name for itself by presenting large-scale, Broadway-style musicals in a small intimate setting at Hollywood’s MET Theatre.

Grove Theatre’s Rockin’ Beach Blast
Get ready for a summertime concert packed with the classic sounds that bring back memories of sunny beach days. At the Rockin’ Beach Blast, you’ll hear all your favorite surf music inspired by the Beach Boys and other SoCal classic rock groups. Headlining the show is The Nocturnes, a five-member group from the 1960's who honor the Beach Boys in their tribute show. Theatre 360 Brings Back Spring Awakening
On May 10th, Theatre 360 Performing Arts is putting on a very unusual and jaw-dropping production of Spring Awakening with their students ages 13 to 19. In late 2012, they took the big risk of producing Spring Awakening for one weekend and realized what a visceral experience and huge success the students had with the production. Ticket demand exceeded the seats available so they have brought it back for more performances. There will be a preview performance on May 9 at 7:00 pm and the show will run May 10 – 19, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm at Porticos Theatre, 2033 E. Stages Musical Theatre Festival Returns
Stages Musical Theatre Festival returns to Los Angeles August 23-25 at the Lonny Chapman Theatre (10900 Burbank Blvd in North Hollywood) and the Academy For New Musical Theatre, 5628 Vineland in North Hollywood. The Festival will feature eight new musicals in various stages of development that will be announced in late spring. An annual tradition for 15 years in Chicago, Stages moved to L.A. in 2010. Festival Passes are $75 and will admit you to every event in the Festival except a Friday night gala. As was the tradition in Chicago, tickets to individual events will be available at the box office 15 minutes before curtain; individual tickets cannot be reserved in advance. Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Attic
Attic Community Theater in Santa Ana presents Thoroughly Modern Millie, the high-energy singing and dancing musical extravaganza set in 1920s New York April 25 – May 19, with performances on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights at 7:30 pm, and Sunday matinees at 2:30 pm. Theatre of NOTE – Hot Cat
Theatre of NOTE is honored to be working with Theatre Movement Bazaar in presenting the world premiere of Hot Cat, directed and choreographed by Tina Kronis, text by Richard Alger. Hot Cat is an original play created with the unique talents of Theatre Movement Bazaar, featuring performers from Theatre of NOTE’s ensemble, using a synthesis of dance and theatre, a mixture of comedy and philosophy to create an original and proactive theatrical experience. In this production their unique theatrical approach will recreate an American classic inspired  by the work of Tennessee Williams. The cast includes Blaire Chandler, Crystal Diaz, David Guerra, Eric Neil Gutierrez, David LM McIntyre, and Jenny Soo. Theatre Movement Bazaar will provide the set and sound designs. Costume design is by Amanda Lee; lighting design by Brandon Baruch; Erin Fleming is the prop master; original music is by Wes Myers. West Side Story is Back
West Side Story, the hit Broadway musical by Arthur Laurents (book), Leonard Bernstein (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), returns to the Pantages Theatre for one week only April 9 – 14. Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, it tells the story of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as they struggle to rise above the hatred and intolerance that surrounds them. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” West Side Story will feature Addison Reid Coe as Tony, Mary Joanna Grisso as Maria, Michelle Alves as Anita, Theo Lencicki as Riff and Andrés Acosta as Bernardo. Jerry Herman High School Musical Theatre Awards

Performers Workshop Auditions - August 26

Auditions will be held Sunday, August 26 from 2 -6 PM for the Fall session of ANMT’s Performers Workshop, created and taught by Broadway Actor/Director/Acting Coach Joshua Finkel with Musical Direction by Jake Anthony. The Performers Workshop is an intensive structured curriculum in Musical Theater Actor Training concentrating on Audition and Performance Techniques. Classes begin September 5 and 8, 2012. If accepted, your audition will place you in:

 Adult Level 1
• 10 Wednesday evenings from 7-10pm beginning September 5th. $450
• Build and perform your basic Audition Song package.
• Learn all the technique of creating two wonderful audition pieces.
• All work will be featured in a showcase on November 14, 2012.

 Adult Advanced Level 2
• 6 Saturday afternoons from 3-6pm starting September 8th. $275
• Work on new audition songs or monologues
• Build a role into your body or
• Work on callbacks
• Performer Showcase on November 14, 2012

 NEW! Adult Professional Level 3
• 6 Saturday mornings from 11am-2pm starting September 8th. $620
• Geared toward the working professional.
• Classes in Demo Recording, Singing on Film, Audition Panels
• Audition for top agents, casting directors and directors of Theater and Musical Theater
• The fall session helps you construct and record a three song demo each 1 minute in length.
• Learn the techniques and basics of working in a recording studio
• Leave the class with a polished 3 song demo showing your range and versatility.
• Fall Showcase on November 14, 2012

 Class size is limited to 10-12 singers so everyone will perform at each session with intensive personalized coaching. • Bring sheet music to 2 contrasting songs in your key
