West Side Story is Back
West Side Story, the hit Broadway musical by Arthur Laurents (book), Leonard Bernstein (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), returns to the Pantages Theatre for one week only April 9 – 14. Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, it tells the story of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as they struggle to rise above the hatred and intolerance that surrounds them. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” West Side Story will feature Addison Reid Coe as Tony, Mary Joanna Grisso as Maria, Michelle Alves as Anita, Theo Lencicki as Riff and Andrés Acosta as Bernardo. With its cast of Broadway veterans and talented young Southern California performers ready to take the next step in their careers, IOA Theatricals’ west coast premiere of Lin Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights is poised to be something very special. The show will provide a rare opportunity for California-based performers to shine. Arcadia High School Theatre Department presents The Drowsy Chaperone in the brand new Arcadia Performing Arts Center March 21 – 23. There will be three performances only - Thursday, March 21 at 7pm, Friday, March 22 at 7pm, and Saturday, March 23 at 4pm. It is the first musical being performed in the new state-of-the-art 1,200 seat center located at 180 Campus Drive in Arcadia. The Tony Award winning musical with book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, and music & lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, is a parody of the American musical comedy of the 1920s. The cast features over 42 drama students from grades 10, 11 and 12 under the direction of drama teacher Steven Volpe. The stage craft class of 30 students has built a 20-foot model airplane along with a full set that includes rolling spiral staircases. In addition to set design the class is responsible for the lighting, costumes and hair and make-up. The music comes from a live band comprised of students along with Musical Director Pu. Out of the Box Theatre Company presents the Santa Barbara premiere of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, now through February 24, featuring music and lyrics by Michael Friedman and book by Alex Timbers. The musical redefines America's controversial seventh president; the man who invented the Democratic Party, drove the Indians west, and ultimately doubled the size of our nation, with a raucous blend of outrageous comedy, anarchic theatricality and an infectious emo punk rock score. Using contemporary humor and possessing a razor-sharp political edge, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson explores our country’s teenage years and – out of our desire to be understood and fairly represented by our government – the effects of Populism.

The Kentwood Players present Ragtime March 15 – April 20 at the Westchester Playhouse, based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow, with book by Terrence McNally, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. The show will be directed by Susan Goldman Weisbarth and features musical direction by Bill Wolfe and choreography by Victoria Miller. Ragtime is the quintessential American musical that paints a powerful portrait of life at the turn of the century. Margaret M. Spirito, best known in LA for her performances in the For the Record series at Rockwell Table & Stage and her summer tribute to Amy Winehouse, debuts at the Coterie in Hollywood on February 28. Kritzerland at Sterling’s Upstairs at the Federal will host a special Saturday night performance, Billy! A Celebration of Billy Barnes, on March 2nd at 7:00 pm. The show will star Susanne Blakeslee, Chelsea Emma Franko, Caitlynne Medrek, Jane Noseworthy, and Robert Yacko with special guests Nancy Dussault and JoAnne Worley. Plaid Tidings, written and directed by Stuart Ross, is coming to the Laguna Playhouse beginning November 27, with an official opening night on December 1, and will run through Dec. 30. The cast will feature William Martinez as Frankie, Scott Dreier as Smudge, David Brannen as Sparky and Ciaran McCarthy as Jinx.
On February 9, 1964, the semi-professional harmony group ‘Forever Plaid’ was tragically killed en route to their first big gig, but Frankie, Sparky, Smudge and Jinx are back on The Laguna Playhouse stage in the heart-warming holiday musical, Plaid Tidings. The only problem for this quartet of confused doo-wop wanna-be’s is that they have no idea why they’ve been sent to Laguna Beach or why they all have the overwhelming urge to sing Christmas classics such as “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “ Let It Snow,” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It’s a terrific holiday entertainment for everyone. The Old Globe has announced the cast for its 15th annual production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The holiday musical will run Nov. 17 – Dec. 29. Previews run from Nov. 17 – Nov. 23. Independent Shakespeare Co. presents a new musical based on an old case, Red Barn, written by David Melville, directed by Melissa Chalsma and starring David Bickford, Robert Alan Beuth, Mary Guiliiams, Matthew Michael Hurley, Aisha Kabia, David Melville, Ashley Nguyen, Nikhil Pai, Dana Pollak, Erika Soto, Claudia de Vasco. Writer David Melville grew up hearing the true story of an 1826 murder in a nearby village. The mole-catcher’s daughter and the son of a wealthy landowner had an illicit affair. She became pregnant. What followed involved extraordinary subterfuge, a former convict of an Australian Penal Colony, a school for young girls, a wife located via an ad in the London Times, and 20,000 people attending the public execution of William Corder. An evening of music from The Rocky Horror Show featuring an All-Star cast will take place on Saturday, October 27 – two shows at 9pm and 11pm. Proceeds from the event will go to support The Midnight Mission which provides life necessities and job placement for the homeless. San Diego Musical Theatre announces the final production of their 2012 season, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, December 13 - 23 at the Birch North Park Theatre. What's Happening Around Town for Sept 5
The Grove Theatre will begin performances of Fiddler on the Roof, starring Isaac Keith Swann as Tevya, on September 7. Set in 1905 in the small Jewish village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Theatre Unleashed will present Little Shop of Horrors Sept. 20 - Oct. 27 at studio/stage in Hollywood. Little Shop of Horrors is the modern classic tale of a boy and his man-eating plant. Stuck working as a florist's assistant for a fledgling flower shop in the slums of Skid Row, Seymour Krelborn, an orphan and hopeless romantic, strikes gold (or at least a vein) when he happens upon a most exotic and unusual plant he dubs "Audrey 2" -- after his doe-eyed object of desire and co-worker Audrey. 1776 - Cabrillo Music Theatre
Cabrillo Music Theatre celebrates election season with 1776 opening Friday, October 19
at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Directed and choreographed by Nick DeGruccio, with musical direction by Steven Applegate, the production will star Pete Husmann as John Adams, Steve Gunderson as Benjamin Franklin, Dan Callaway as Thomas Jefferson, and Michael Andrew Baker as John Dickinson. Joan Stein Memorial
Friends, family, and colleagues will gather on Monday, October 8 at 8:00pm at the Brentwood Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate the life of Joan Stein. A major force in theatre on both coasts, Stein was producer and/or general manager on over 80 productions during her career of over 30 years. She died on August 3 in Los Angeles of appendiceal cancer. She was 59. The Brentwood Theatre is located on the Veteran’s Administration grounds at 11301 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, 90073. Upon entering the VA campus off Wilshire, follow road signs to the Brentwood Theatre.

A spectacular concert event featuring all Oscar-nominated songs, right next door to the actual Oscars. Opening for Mr. Alexander will be the much anticipated return of The Lovely Carol.

When You Wish Upon a Star, featuring music from classic family films.
