Sterling's Moves to New Location at The Federal

Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s in Studio City closes its doors following its March 18 performance - Reba Buhr, co-star of Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim.

According to producer Michael Sterling, “After nearly six years of pouring sweat equity into Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s, and welcoming thousands and thousands of guests who supported over 350 shows which featured some 400 performers singing the music of Broadway and the Great American Songbook... not to mention our stake in reinvigorating the art of cabaret and bringing back the total “supper club experience” to the cultural landscape of Los Angeles... we simply outgrew the space on a technical and artistic level. It was time to move on,” said Sterling.  “As a result, we are thrilled to open Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal on April 1st with our new, barely year old partner The Federal Bar and Restaurant, part of Knitting Factory Entertainment which showcases all genres of music, the performing arts, dancing, and stand-up comedy in various venues throughout the country.”

“Located in the heart of North Hollywood’s trendy NoHo Arts District,” added Sterling, “The Federal has not only recognized first-hand our award-winning achievements and place within LA’s performing arts community... but our need to grow and to maintain our artistic integrity and technical production standards, as well as our equally high expectations in dining and superior service for our patrons. By all accounts, The Federal is a natural fit for us.”

Headlining engagements at Sterling’s Upstairs will be presented on Sundays beginning April 1st with its grand opening performance of Kritzerland’s Take Me Along: The Songs and Stories of Bob Merrill. Merrill wrote incredibly tuneful, fun pop songs like “How Much is That Doggy in the Window?” “Mambo Italiano,” “Honeycomb,” and many others, as well as songs for such Broadway musicals as New Girl in Town, Take Me Along, Carnival, Henry, Sweet Henry, Prettybelle, Sugar, and of course, Funny Girl.

Hosted and directed by Kritzerland Records’ Founder Bruce Kimmel, Take Me Along is produced in association with Adryan Russ and stars Julie Garnyé, Juliana Hansen, Melody Hollis, Kristofer McNeeley, Jeffrey Todd and special guest, Lainie Kazan, who appeared in the original Broadway company of Funny Girl. Music Director is Christy Crowl.

Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal is located at 5303 Lankershim Blvd. (at Weddington Street), North Hollywood, 91601. Attendance is by reservation only. Reservations may be made for the April 1st grand opening by calling (818) 754-8700 beginning Monday, March 19th. Table and Bar seating for this event only is $28 per person which includes a $10 food and/or beverage minimum.

Cortes Alexander's Have A Swell Holiday Show was...Swell!

Cortes Alexander. Photos by Eric Schneider

There’s no denying it was a Swell night at Sterling’s Upstairs at the Federal on December 10th, thanks to Cortes Alexander and his Have a Swell Holiday Show. It was my first introduction to the charming performer, and it was also my first time at Sterling’s new supper club, where producer Michael Sterling has continued his tradition of presenting some of the finest musical theatre artists and nightclub entertainers L.A. has to offer.

Sterling moved to his present location in April, following a successful six year run at his original venue, Upstairs at Vitello’s in Studio City. The Federal’s sophisticated ambience offers a cool, uptown vibe and an intimate setting that highlights an ever-changing array of artists and music, perfect for a historic building in the NoHo Arts District that has itself had many different lives.

Alexander’s set list featured an eclectic mix of styles, from jazz to musical theatre to pop, with holiday favorites that slipped between his original songs like twinkling lights peeking out from a Christmas tree. He began the show with his own arrangement of Bricusse & Newly’s “Pure Imagination,” setting the tone for the evening with an enchanting invitation to travel in a world of his creation. Entertaining stories followed to introduce some of his original compositions. Among them were “Driving Song,” a smooth, slow composition about his first car, “LA to Paris,” a touching ode to love, and “Marguerite,” inspired by the cow in Hal Prince’s backyard.

He talked about touring the world with Liza Minnelli, good and bad reviews he’s received, and how you can see his mother – well, her back at least – in the rain scene of Singing in the Rain. She was responsible for instilling in Alexander a joy for music and an ever-optimistic love of life as they tooled down the open road in their VW bus singing at the top of their lungs. His heartfelt remembrances were moving, and often humorous.

In the spirit of the season, Alexander included several luscious holiday songs including a jazzy version of “Winter Wonderland” arranged by Jason Robert Brown, Kay Thompson’s arrangement of “Jingle Bells,” and his own arrangement of “The Christmas Song.” It doesn’t matter how many times I hear that song, I love it every time and his version is quite special.

Cortes Alexander and The Swell Girls, (L-R) Julie Garnye and Melissa Bailey.

Back-up was provided by the outstanding Swell Girls, Melissa Bailey and Julie Garnye, each featured in a big way; Bailey on a terrific arrangement she and Alexander created for “Slow Boat to China/Shanghai” by Frank Loesser and Garnye on the beautiful “Any Day Now.” The band was first-rate, led by musical director John Boswell on piano and included Norman Ludwin on bass, Terry Schoenig on percussion, and Paul Landry on guitar. Landry’s feature on the charming “Love on a Greyhound Bus” was a highlight.

A nice guy with a big personality and a charming way with a song – that’s Cortes Alexander. Spend an evening with him the next time he appears in L.A.

Cortes Alexander’s Have a Swell Holiday, Sterling’s Upstairs at the Federal, 5303 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood. You can check out upcoming shows at Sterling’s Upstairs online at www.msapr.net. For reservations call (818) 754-8700.

What’s Happening Around Town for October 28, 2012

The Producers
It began 60 years ago with eight guys sitting around a poker table in a smoke-filled room on a Monday night, trying to figure out what to do with $600. Typically, they’d throw themselves a year-end bash with the money they put aside from each pot at their weekly poker game. But the talk had gotten around to doing something different that year – something for someone else. And that’s exactly what they did. 60 years later Help Youth Charities Fund has raised over $ 4.5 Million dollars towards its charter cause. "Helping handicapped and underprivileged children of every race, color & creed." This year they guys are putting up Mel Brooks’ The Producers November 1 -11 at the ACME Comedy Theatre on La Brea. The entire production is volunteer driven & ALL funds raised through the production will go towards our mission of helping the kids! Some past projects & programs funded include:
-Therapeutic Swimming pool for Physically Challenged Youth
-Training kitchen for multi-disability blind children.
-Woodworking shop to rehabilitate street kids.
-A voice synthesizer for a teenager without any vocal chords.
-Construction of special needs playground for disabled kids.
Tickets are $20 online at www.acmecomedy.com/tickets.htm and $25 at the door. Get them now!
