Life Could Be a Dream brings Doo Wop to the Hudson

What if the writer/director of The Marvelous Wonderettes wrote a brand new musical? Well, he did, and it’s called Life Could Be a Dream, the 1960 Doo Wop Musical.

Roger Bean’s new show will play the Hudson Mainstage Theatre in Hollywood beginning July 27. Lee Martino choreographs with musical direction by Michael Paternostro; opening night is scheduled for Aug. 7. Featured in the cast are Doug Carpenter as Skip, Justin Michael Duval as Wally, Jim Holdridge as Eugene, Daniel Tatar as Denny and Jessica Keenan Wynn as Lois.

In Life Could Be a Dream we meet the boy band The Crooning Crabcakes, a fictional group referenced in Wonderettes. In the musical, the guys get one more chance at fame and fortune as Denny and his friend Eugene form a singing group so they can enter and win the local radio contest on Big Whopper Radio and realize their dreams of making it to the big time! With the help of their best friend Wally and their new friend Skip, this is the best quartet of singers since, well, you know who! Trouble comes in the form of Lois, who arrives to help put some polish on the group but who also broke Eugene's heart many years before at their Junior Prom. As Eugene falls apart, Skip, Wally and Denny fall in love - and hilarity and heartaches ensue!” Among the songs featured in the new production are "The Great Pretender," "Unchained Melody," "Earth Angel" and "Sh-Boom."

Life Could Be a Dream is produced by David Elzer, Peter Schneider and Crooning Crabcakes, LLC, and will run through Sept. 27. For tickets call (323) 960-4412 or visit
