New musicals Bubble Boy and Visions featured in Festival
The Festival of New American Musicals has announced two late additions to its 2009 schedule. The first is Bubble Boy, a musical based on the 2001 comedy film that starred Jake Gyllenhall. This ASCAP/Festival workshop presentation will have two performances at Disney Studios on August 25 and 26.
The second is Visions, a modern symphonic rock opera with a powerful universal theme of world peace, spirituality and unity featuring the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., Buddha, Abraham Lincoln, Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ, Nelson Mandela, Socrates and Lady Diana. It will be presented for one gala performance only on Monday, August 24 at 8 PM at the Nate Holden Theater by the William Grant Still Cultural Center.
Details for tickets will be available soon on the Festival website at www.lafestival.org/.
Over the past few months, musical theatre lovers in southern California have been able to experience a wealth of new musicals, thanks to the efforts of Festival founders Marcia Seligson (Producing Artistic Director of Reprise! Broadway’s Best from 1996-2006) and Bob Klein (founding board member of Reprise! and specialist in marketing the arts).
The festival concept was designed to encourage theaters, large and small, high schools, colleges and cultural centers to participate in showcasing the enormous body of creative talent in the area, and also to encourage a new generation to join the musical theatre-going audience. Judging from the overwhelming response to the 2009 season of shows, we think they’re on the right track!
